Shany Barath
Arch. Shany Barath is an Assistant Professor for computational design and manufacturing and Director of D.DLab (Disrupt.Design) research facility in the faculty of Architecture at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Shany focuses on design-led technological research improving the sustainability of the built environment. She received her degree in architecture from the TUDelft faculty of Architecture in The Netherlands (MSc. with distinction) and her postgraduate degree in Architecture & Computation (M.Arch) from the Architectural Association (AA) Design Research Laboratory in London. Between 2009-2018 Shany held the academic role of Studio Master at the AA in London and directed the AATLV program. Shany is Co-PI in the HORIZON2020 consortium ECOLOPES, developing building envelopes for multi-species habitation and PROTOHAB prototyping an Integrated Facade System (IFS) for Spontaneous Multi-Species Habitation. Focusing on projects that enable design to facilitate ecological and environmental urgencies, D.DLab develops additive manufacturing workflows with bio-based, waste (plastics, wood), and biologically enhanced materials for the construction industry.
Through her vast experience in practice gained in international markets and as the co-founder of Shaga Architects, she has led high-profile projects integrating computational methodologies with analysis and simulation engines across evaluation fields for design and manufacturing applications. Shany has also been appointed as expert contributor and advisor to; URBAN AI International Think Tank, International Society for Construction Solutions and Tidhar Construction Ltd. Future think tank and is a member of the Israeli National Building Research Institute NBRI since 2019. Among other awards, she was the winner of the AICF Cultural foundation grant of excellence and the recipient of the Archiprix Design Award. She has lectured, published, and exhibited worldwide including the Venice Biennale, Beijing Biennale, London Eco-Build, CIS Las Vegas, FRAC Centre for contemporary art and Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art.
