Research Topic: Material as Technology
Designing material operating systems for post-fabrication responsiveness
Taking a cue from research at the crossroads between chemistry, material science, and nanotechnology this research examines the role of material-driven fabrication methods that enable the integration of pre-programmed geometrical and visual expressions onto customized thin-film composites from within a spatial mindset. The development of smart materials and flexible systems, such as Electro-Thermal Actuators (ETAs), Thermochromic, Hydrochomatic and Photochromic inks, opens up mechanisms of movement and visuals actuation and expressions that demonstrate a range of encouraging possibilities for both accessible and articulated composite behavior. Understanding the operability of material composites within current thin-film printing processes enables us to discover new narratives for material performance and explore how their dynamic behavior may be designed and experienced in the space of architecture as material interfaces.
